This year marks the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation started by John Knox who brought John Calvin`s(500th anniversary of Calvinism last year) teaching back from Geneva eventually leading to Scottish Presbyterianism and the Church of Scotland (the `Kirk`).  read more here:-

Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland plans to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.
Ian Wilson: Grand Master  said: “We shall be concentrating our energies instead on marking the 450th Anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.”
He added: “With the Catholic Church mired in turmoil and scandal, I could be persuaded that Pope Benedict is unwittingly doing us a favour by coming to Scotland at this time.
“His visit could turn out to be a timely reminder of why our forefathers walked away from Rome and embraced Protestantism in 1560.”

The Kirk subscribed to the Calvinistic Westminister Confession of Faith which was adapted and adopted by various Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Baptists

Knox produced various texts and raised eyebrows when on 26 March 1564 Knox stirred controversy again, when he married Margaret Stewart, the daughter of an old friend, Andrew Stewart, a member of the Stuart family and a distant relative of the queen, Mary Stuart. The marriage was unusual because he was a widower of fifty, while the bride was only seventeen.  Very few details are known of their domestic life. They had three daughters, Martha, Margaret, and Elizabeth.

Protestant Reformation in Scotland is marked
THE 450th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland will be marked at the Scottish Presbyterian General Assembly this week-end.

The Reformation, which led to the formation of The Kirk as the Scottish national church, was spearheaded by formidable fundamentalist cleric John Knox

The Scottish Reformation developed from a sequence of events affecting the monarchy and church in the country.

When King James V died in 1542, he was succeeded by his daughter, the six-day-old Mary Queen of Scots. His widow Mary of Guise served as Regent of Scotland and, with the help of French monarchists, preserved the Roman Catholic faith in Scotland.

This was despite the growing influence of John Knox and his followers for a Protestant Scotland, supported latterly by Queen Elizabeth I of England.

When Mary of Guise died in June 1560, the Parliament of Scotland set to work and on August 24,1560 passed legislation that abolished the old faith, replacing it with the Reformed Protestant (Presbyterian) doctrine, that had been propagated in Geneva by Reformer John Calvin.

The Pope's jurisdiction in Scotland ceased and the celebration of Roman Catholic Mass was made punishable, ultimately by death. To mark the change, John Knox led a great service of thanksgiving in Edinburgh's celebrated High Kirk, St Giles' Cathedral.

Tomorrow afternoon, in the General Assembly Hall in Edinburgh there will be a special session of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to mark the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.

This will include worship (making good use of the Reformation Psalms), special music from the choir and orchestra of Hyndland School, Glasgow, readings from the records of the Scottish Parliament of August 1560 and from the records of the first Presbyterian General Assembly held in 1560.

There will also be historical input with an exhibition (all week in New College Ibyer) and reflections on the influence of the Protestant Reformation on education, as well as Scottish life and culture more generally.

Coronation Day

http://lordbelmontinnorthernireland.blogspot.com/2008/06/coronation-of-hm-queen.html

Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other realms and territories Queen.

Today marks the anniversary of the Coronation of Her Most Excellent Majesty The Queen exactly fifty-seven years ago, on the 2nd June, 1953, at Westminster Abbey.

1953: Queen Elizabeth takes coronation oath
http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/june/2/newsid_2654000/2654501.stm
Queen Elizabeth II has been crowned at a coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey in London.

In front of more than 8,000 guests, including prime ministers and heads of state from around the Commonwealth, she took the Coronation Oath and is now bound to serve her people and to maintain the laws of God.

After being handed the four symbols of authority - the orb, the sceptre, the rod of mercy and the royal ring of sapphire and rubies - the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Geoffrey Fisher, placed St Edward's Crown on her head to complete the ceremony.

A shout of "God Save the Queen" was heard and gun salutes were fired as crowds cheered.

The Archbishop and fellow bishops then paid homage to Queen Elizabeth II.

In a radio broadcast the Queen said: "Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust".

An estimated three million people lined the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the new monarch as she made her way to and from Buckingham Palace in the golden state coach.

The ceremony was watched by millions more around the world as the BBC set up their biggest ever outside broadcast to provide live coverage of the event on radio and television. Street parties were held throughout the UK as people crowded round television sets to watch the ceremony.

Fireworks

The crowds, some of whom had camped out overnight to ensure a prime position, were rewarded when the Queen and other members of her family, including the Queen Mother, appeared on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Despite the overcast weather conditions the RAF marked the occasion with a fly past down the Mall.

A fireworks display then lit up the skies above Victoria Embankment.

The Queen replaced her father, King George VI, as monarch following his death on 6 February 1952. After 16 years on the throne he passed away in his sleep and his 25-year-old daughter Elizabeth immediately became Queen.

The princess formally proclaimed herself Queen and Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith in February 1952 but the amount of planning and a wish for a sunny day for the occasion led to the long but excited wait for this day.

---

In Context
Over 20 million people watched the BBC coverage of the coronation. Many people crowded round neighbour's sets to watch television for the first time. The broadcast was made in 44 languages.

There was a shortage of professional coachmen to help transport dignitaries to Westminster Abbey in horse drawn carriages. Millionaire businessmen and country squires offered their services and on the day they dressed up as Buckingham Palace servants and helped take people to the ceremony.

Many commemorative souvenirs were produced to mark the occasion including a special set of four postage stamps.

In 2002 the Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee. She marked her 50 years on the throne with a mammoth tour of the Commonwealth and UK where millions turned out to celebrate during the Jubilee weekend.

The highlight of the weekend was the 'Party at the Palace' where stars from Ozzy Osbourne and Sir Paul McCartney to S Club 7 and Blue joined forces to entertain the crowds at Buckingham Palace.

Scotland will build on the success of the Year of Homecoming by staging a second formal celebration in 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond said today.

Homecoming 2014 will take place in the year that Scotland hosts the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup and marks the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

The FM made the announcement on the same day an independent evaluation revealed the enormous benefits of the first year of Homecoming in 2009.

Research by economic and social development consultancy EKOS shows Homecoming Scotland 2009:

    * generated £53.7 million in additional tourism revenue for Scotland, exceeding the £44 million target by 22 percent
    * attracted 95,000 additional visitors to Scotland
    * generated £154 million of positive global media coverage

The FM also launched a new digital archive that will showcase Homecoming 2009 to audiences at home and abroad.

The Homecoming Scotland Digital Archives and Exhibition Project, designed by Queen Margaret University, uses new Microsoft technology to allow users to learn more about Homecoming 2009 and increase interest in Homecoming 2014.

An archivist will collate Homecoming documents, brochures, articles and video clips which will be digitised using Microsoft's Zenity product. The archives will be available online from January next year and a public exhibition will begin a tour of Scotland in the summer.

Mr Salmond said:

"In 2014 the eyes of the world will be on Scotland as the Commonwealth Games comes to Glasgow and the Gleneagles hosts the Ryder Cup and Scots at home and abroad mark the anniversary of Bannockburn.

"In this year of celebration, repeating the remarkable success and benefits of Homecoming 2009 is an excellent opportunity to attract tourism and investment and showcase the very best of Scotland.

"The independent evaluation published today proves the unprecedented effect of the first Homecoming, attracting almost 100,000 people, generating £53.7 million extra income and contributing to visitor numbers rising by three percent despite the downturn and a four percent drop in global tourism.

"The Homecoming archive, developed by Queen Margaret University using new Microsoft technology, underlines our reputation for innovation and has the potential to become a model for the future. This ground breaking new product will ensure that the success of the celebration of Scotland and its many contributions to the world will be available for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.

"2014 has been designated as the next formal Homecoming year, but as this year's focus on food and drink indicates, the themes of Homecoming will be carried forward every year. This is crucial as we build on the success of 2009 and towards 2014."

Dr Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said:

"In world tourism terms, Homecoming has been seen as a unique marketing tool by competing tourist destinations who would love the Diaspora that Scotland enjoys. The success of last year's Homecoming sparked huge interest in people all over the world, not only those with ancestral links to Scotland, but those who simply love this country.

"Working with businesses within the industry, VisitScotland will once again seize the tremendous opportunity that Homecoming represents. Whichever country visitors are travelling from in order to enjoy the wide-ranging celebrations in 2014, they can be guaranteed the warmest possible welcome to these shores and I have no doubt they will leave with memories they will treasure forever."

Dr Petra Wend, Principal and Vice Patron of Queen Margaret University, said:

"Development of the Homecoming Archive presents a tremendously exciting opportunity for Queen Margaret University to collect, catalogue, and preserve materials associated with the Scottish Homecoming 2009 for the benefit of a very broad range of people, both in Scotland and across the world.

"We know that the archive will be of great use to all those involved in promoting tourism and economic development in Scotland, those considering tourism initiatives across the world, and scholars of today and future generations. We look forward to sharing the archives with a wide audience through an information-rich website and a travelling exhibition across Scotland."

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of EventScotland, said:

"Scotland's events industry came out in force to support Homecoming 2009. Many events enjoyed their best ever year, with established events featuring Homecoming inspired activity selling out or breaking previous box office bests. This includes Scotland's international poetry festival StAnza, The Royal Highland Show and Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Whilst events created specifically for the year, like Burns Light in Dumfries, captured the imagination of visitors and local people alike."

Homecoming Scotland 2009 aimed to deliver an 8:1 return on the core investment of £5.5 million by generating £44 million of additional tourism revenue for Scotland.
