Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland plans to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.
Ian Wilson: Grand Master  said: “We shall be concentrating our energies instead on marking the 450th Anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.”
He added: “With the Catholic Church mired in turmoil and scandal, I could be persuaded that Pope Benedict is unwittingly doing us a favour by coming to Scotland at this time.
“His visit could turn out to be a timely reminder of why our forefathers walked away from Rome and embraced Protestantism in 1560.”

The Kirk subscribed to the Calvinistic Westminister Confession of Faith which was adapted and adopted by various Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Baptists

And of course the reformation continued in various ways throughout the British Isles including the Puritans & Oliver Cromwell and the Glorious Revolution.

Knox produced various texts and raised eyebrows when on 26 March 1564 Knox stirred controversy again, when he married Margaret Stewart, the daughter of an old friend, Andrew Stewart, a member of the Stuart family and a distant relative of the queen, Mary Stuart. The marriage was unusual because he was a widower of fifty, while the bride was only seventeen.  Very few details are known of their domestic life. They had three daughters, Martha, Margaret, and Elizabeth.

Protestant Reformation in Scotland is marked
THE 450th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland will be marked at the Scottish Presbyterian General Assembly this week-end.

The Reformation, which led to the formation of The Kirk as the Scottish national church, was spearheaded by formidable fundamentalist cleric John Knox

The Scottish Reformation developed from a sequence of events affecting the monarchy and church in the country.

When King James V died in 1542, he was succeeded by his daughter, the six-day-old Mary Queen of Scots. His widow Mary of Guise served as Regent of Scotland and, with the help of French monarchists, preserved the Roman Catholic faith in Scotland.

This was despite the growing influence of John Knox and his followers for a Protestant Scotland, supported latterly by Queen Elizabeth I of England.

When Mary of Guise died in June 1560, the Parliament of Scotland set to work and on August 24,1560 passed legislation that abolished the old faith, replacing it with the Reformed Protestant (Presbyterian) doctrine, that had been propagated in Geneva by Reformer John Calvin.

The Pope's jurisdiction in Scotland ceased and the celebration of Roman Catholic Mass was made punishable, ultimately by death. To mark the change, John Knox led a great service of thanksgiving in Edinburgh's celebrated High Kirk, St Giles' Cathedral.

Tomorrow afternoon, in the General Assembly Hall in Edinburgh there will be a special session of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to mark the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.

This will include worship (making good use of the Reformation Psalms), special music from the choir and orchestra of Hyndland School, Glasgow, readings from the records of the Scottish Parliament of August 1560 and from the records of the first Presbyterian General Assembly held in 1560.

There will also be historical input with an exhibition (all week in New College Ibyer) and reflections on the influence of the Protestant Reformation on education, as well as Scottish life and culture more generally.
